Who This Permaculture Design Course Is Not For (And who tends to thrive here)

Over the past 15 years, we’ve welcomed students from all walks of life, from first-time learners to professional farmers, designers, policymakers, and educators. People arrive with very different motivations, backgrounds, and future plans.

Because of that diversity, there is no single “type” of student who belongs here.

That said, this course is not for everyone, and being clear about that helps people decide with confidence.

This page is here to offer clarity, not to discourage.

This course may not be a good fit if…

You’re looking for a resort-style experience

Finca Tierra is best described as comfortable, simple, and immersed in nature, something closer to luxury camping than a luxury hotel.

Cabinas are hand-built bamboo structures, meals are prepared and served throughout the day, and daily life happens largely outdoors. The experience is interactive and centered around learning, land, and good food.

Learning happens in gardens, food forests, and open-air classrooms. If you are seeking room service, private luxury, or a passive vacation experience, this may not be the right setting.

You want theory only, without hands-on work

This is a hands-on Permaculture Design Course.

While we cover ethics, design frameworks, systems thinking, and planning in depth, a significant part of learning happens through:

  • planting

  • harvesting

  • building soil

  • observing real systems

  • working with tools and materials

You don’t need to be in exceptional physical shape. Students range from 18 to 65 and beyond, and you should be comfortable participating in practical activities at a steady, supportive pace.

You’re expecting a rigid or purely academic structure

Learning at Finca Tierra is experiential.

We follow a clear curriculum, but the land itself is a teacher. Weather, soil, plants, and living systems shape the rhythm of each day. If you need everything to be highly scripted or purely classroom-based, this style of learning may feel unfamiliar.

You’re not interested in food systems or ecological thinking

Even for students focused on policy, design, or community planning, food systems are central here.

You’ll be immersed in:

  • tropical food forests

  • staple crops

  • diet design

  • garden-to-table processing

  • how real systems feed people year-round

If food, land, and ecosystems don’t interest you at all, this course may not align with your goals.

You’re uncomfortable being outdoors most days

The course takes place during the Caribbean dry season, when conditions are generally warm, bright, and comfortable. Most participants are surprised by how few mosquitoes there usually are, though this can vary by day or week, as it does in any warm environment.

You’ll spend time outdoors every day, moving between gardens, forest systems, and open-air classrooms. Heat, humidity, and the occasional muddy path are part of learning in a living system, but they are rarely extreme.

If spending much of the day outdoors feels more stressful than engaging, this may not be the right setting.

Who tends to thrive here

Students who enjoy this course most often:

  • are curious and open-minded

  • enjoy learning by doing

  • are comfortable with simplicity and shared rhythms

  • want practical skills they can adapt anywhere

  • are interested in how systems connect food, water, energy, soil, and people

Some come to apply permaculture to land they already manage.
Some come to understand tropical ecosystems.
Some come for policy, design, or long-term planning.
Some come simply to learn deeply, slowly, and in community.

All of those reasons are welcome.

A final note on intention

You don’t need to arrive knowing exactly what you’ll do with this knowledge.

You don’t need to own land.
You don’t need farming experience.
You don’t need a five-year plan.

What matters most is a willingness to:

  • observe

  • participate

  • learn from real systems

  • engage thoughtfully with the land and the group

If that resonates, you’re likely to feel at home here.

Still unsure?

If you’ve read this and feel drawn to the experience, or if you’re on the fence and want to talk it through, you’re very welcome to reach out.

We’re always happy to help people decide if this is the right fit.
