Finca Tierra is a partner in SEED, the Society for Ecological Education and Development, which is located in the foothills above the Caribbean beach village of Cahuita. One of the projects on the 370-acre SEED property is our expanding ecovillage agricommunity - the International Community for Sustainable Living.
The half-hectare (1.25 acre) ecovillage agricommunity housing sites are nearby our seven-hectare Agroecology Demonstration Center, which is the nucleus of SEED. The Center features organic gardens, food forestry, orchards, agricultural buildings and biodigesters. The farm’s closed loop nutrient cycle attains self-sufficiency with careful monitoring. Here sustainable agriculture is achieved by cultivating animals, plants and fungi for food, fostering wild medicinal plants and harvesting biofuel.
Located near Cahuita National Park, other features of SEED are rainforest hiking trails, a wonderful waterfall and two beautiful rivers for swimming and fishing. Along with the village community and sustainable farm, other SEED projects are forest and wildlife preservation, reforestation, and agricultural education outreach in the local community.
